Baselayer for Women – Comfort and Fit for Hunting

The innermost layer of clothing – the baselayer – is the foundation of all functional hunting apparel for women. It sits directly against the skin and plays a significant role in how the body regulates heat and moisture. A correctly chosen baselayer can mean the difference between a hunting day spent in comfort and one marked by cold and dampness. At Northern Hunting, we develop baselayers for women that combine technical performance with a fit tailored to female hunters and the specific demands of hunting and Nordic weather conditions.

Why Does a Good Baselayer Matter?

When hunting, you frequently alternate between movement and stillness. During a stalk or a driven hunt, the body works hard and produces moisture, while high seat hunting requires you to stay warm for many hours without activity. The baselayer's most important job is to move moisture away from the skin while supporting a stable body temperature.

Merino Wool – Insulation, Comfort and Versatility

Merino wool is one of the most widely used baselayer materials, and it is particularly well suited to women who want both comfort and technical performance:

  • Insulates even when wet: Wool fibres can absorb moisture without losing their thermal properties.
  • Natural temperature regulation: Keeps the body warm in the cold and helps dissipate excess heat during activity.
  • Odour neutrality: Wool inhibits bacterial growth, so the garment can be worn for several days without odour.
  • Soft and skin-friendly: Merino wool's fine fibres ensure the material feels comfortable directly against the skin.

Merino wool is therefore well suited to both relaxed hunting styles such as high seat hunting and to active hunting, where temperature regulation and odour neutrality are important. The drawback is that merino wool dries more slowly than synthetic materials, which can be a factor at high intensity.

Synthetic Materials – Fast Moisture Transport and Drying

Synthetic fibres such as polyester and polyamide are an obvious choice for women who pursue active hunting where the body produces a lot of moisture:

  • Efficient moisture transport: Moves sweat away from the skin and keeps the body dry.
  • Short drying time: The material dries quickly and reduces the risk of chilling.
  • Durable and stretchy: Well suited to movement through dense terrain and frequent use.

Synthetic baselayers are therefore particularly well suited to stalking and driven hunting, where intensity is high and the risk of becoming wet and cold must be minimised.

The Layering Principle – Baselayer as the Foundation

A baselayer works best as part of a complete layering system. It works together with a midlayer – typically a warming jumper or a fleece – and an outer layer that protects against wind and precipitation.

  • Baselayer: Sits close to the body and keeps the skin dry.
  • Midlayer: Adds warmth and insulation, usually in the form of a jumper or fleece.
  • Outer layer: Protects against wind, rain and snow.

The combination of the three layers provides a flexible solution where you can adapt your clothing to both high activity and long periods of stillness.

Choosing the Right Baselayer

The choice depends on hunting style and climate:

  • Merino wool: Ideal for cold conditions and low activity, but also a strong choice for active hunting where odour neutrality and temperature regulation are an advantage.
  • Synthetic materials: Best for high activity and milder weather, where fast drying is most important.
  • A combination: Blended materials can provide a good balance between warmth, comfort and moisture management.

Women's Baselayers Developed for Nordic Conditions

Northern Hunting designs baselayers for women drawing on experience from active hunters. By combining merino wool's natural properties with modern synthetic fibres, we create solutions that work in practice. The result is baselayers that deliver optimal comfort and performance – whether you are sitting still in a high seat on a winter morning or moving actively on a stalk.
